Other Paper and Paperboard Structures

Trays, sleeves, pouches, and bags are all used for primary packaging designs, inner packaging structures, or in combination for complete packaging design systems.
Sleeves can take on several different configurations and can be die-cut in contours and shapes for a distinctive appearance.

Plastics

A large collection of plastics with different qualities and properties, perform a span of containment and design needs. These can be rigid or flexible; clear, white, or coloured; transparent or opaque; and can be moulded into many different shapes and sizes.

Thermoformed plastics become softer by heat and shaped by moulding, extrusion, or pressing (calendaring). Plastics are very pliable when heated and therefore the plastics offer designers the opportunity to create rather unique forms. Bottles as well as other different structures can make use of labelling in-mould in various colour options (including special metallic colouring and effects), embossing, and finishing techniques such as silk-screen printing and hot stamping with foils.

Blister Packs

Blister Packs are normally made from transparent PVC (polyvinyl chloride), and are thermoformed around the front of a product so that consumers can see the container.

Frequently, a printed paper based backing card has the blister pack  adhered to it or inserted

Hinged or blisters (clamshells) can be formed around both sides of a product so all of it is visible. Designs or branding can be printed directly on the plastic structure.

Blister structures are typically hole-punched so they can be positioned on pegs on retail displays.

Labels (plastic)

Labels are usually made of paper, paper laminates, vinyl or plastic film.

This may be with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing or not.

Furthermore, labels can either be full-wrap or die-cut in many different shapes to complement a structure’s contour.

Shrink film is also used for labelling. When applied with heat, it stretches around the contours of the form it envelops.

Plastic containers, glass bottles, cans, and other rigid structures can be wrapped in this flexible packaging.

Shrink film’s ability to be pre-printed with all the packaging design graphics allows for complete coverage around complex curves and surfaces that cannot be printed.
